Conference « Science in Schools » / Conférence « Science in Schools »

Conf_rence_09_2010__0004a

Dr Z. Gonzalez-Carranza

Lycée Jean Moulin à Béziers, Monday 13 September 2010

This conference was organized within the program « Science in Schools » which is run by the British Council and a board of the French "Ministère de l’éducation nationale", DAREIC: it allows high level researchers working in the United Kingdom to visit French high schools with scientific classes in English. This program offers last year pupils majoring in science to attend conferences in English about specialized research and also about what a career in research is.

As for Dr. Z. Gonzalez-Carranza, lecturer at Nottingham University, the main theme of her conference was how molecular biology can be applied to plant breeding, focusing on the industrial crop of oil palm and also on the model plant Arabidopsis which is widely used in research because of practical reasons (number of chromosomes and cycle).

These topics led her to present her main field of expertise, molecular biology, even if she insisted on the importance of other scientific domains like mathematics, physics and chemistry, and also other fields in biology.

During her very clear talk, she encouraged pupils to participate by asking them questions that were adapted to their level, by asking them to do some exercises in genetics, and also by using experiments on bean pods. As she went on with her lively and educational presentation, she remained open to spontaneous questions from the pupils, so that they had the opportunity to understand more clearly the concepts in the physiology of plants that she was describing.

At the end of her talk, she also gave an overview of her international career, which is quite typical for a researcher; she also enthusiastically showed why and how she enjoyed this varied and motivating profession.

Both pupils and teachers only regretted one thing: her plane was late and the talk started about 20 minutes later than planned, and we had to shorten the discussion as the pupils had to catch their buses and leave.

This conference by Dr Z. Gonzalez-Carranza was proposed by Mrs. R. Feliu-Almanza, DAREIC, Académie de Montpellier, and Mrs. S. Bagshaw and S. Mahieu, British Council. Thanks to their help, and also to the interest granted by Mr. J-R. Veniant, director of Lycée Jean Moulin de Béziers, this conference was organized for the 30 pupils of the scientific class of TS1 by the biology teacher, Mrs D. Lalauze, by the physics and chemistry teacher, Mrs S. Libes, and finally by the English teacher, Mrs A. Ahmadi.
